ACROSS THE AMERICAN DREAM

A RIDE ACROSS A COUNTRY AND BACK TO MYSELF

ABOUT THE BOOK

Riding your bicycle across the United States is hard, real hard. Audrey needed that kind of hard to get her away from the grind of producing television news. Journalism took her heart and soul and ate it for lunch. She was lost. After 30 years of crossing the globe chasing stories, she needed to step off the hamster wheel because she knew she would die if she didn’t.

So, at 51, she decided the best way to get out of a middle-age funk was to take her husband, a hobby long-distance bicycle traveler, and hit the road.

They left Los Angeles one summer day in 2015 and headed north to Astoria, Oregon, to begin a 3700-mile, 80 day bicycle journey across the American heartland all the way to Washington DC.

Little did she know at the start of the ride that there was more than burnout she had to face. With each mile she pedaled, the deep malaise of a woman who had lived her whole life dancing to the tune of others revealed the scars of deep wounds she has been carrying for decades.
